Definitely worth doing once if you're adventuresome.
They offer a 30+ course tasting menu. Most of the dishes are good to great. A few were gross.
Overall, a fun time but DON'T GO IF YOU'RE A PICKY EATER!
Makoto is interesting. It is regarded as the best Japanese place in the DC area.
Ambiance: It feels small and cramped (like I imagine Japan to be). If you're a big guy (which I am not), I would hesitate to go. You are seated on little wooden boxes that are uncomfortable.
I had the omakase menu, my buddy ordered a la carte. The food was really good but don't bring a BIG appetite unless you want to spend $150+.
Overall, I recommend the place but don't come hungry.
My gorgeous girlfriend and I went here for a pre-theater dinner (Noises Off-I'm not recommending this either).
This place is definitely old-school. Lots of septagenarians here. While it is supposed to be a seafood place, we were both put off by the strong, "bad fish" smell experienced when we walked in.
The food is vintage 1950. Not inedible (we didn't have the fish) but not good either.
Went during Restaurant Week so may not be optimal. However, I have to agree with nkpiano...the place is overrated.

This place is TOTALLY GREAT. Don't get there too late (or the valet will interrupt you) but the food and ambiance are terrific.
